KDDIは2011年5月17日、都内にて夏モデルの新機種発表会を開催した。スマートフォンは6機種が新たに発表された。いずれも国内メーカー製の端末で、OSは全機種Android 2.3を搭載する。登壇した同社代表取締役社長の田中孝司氏は、Android端末の大量追加にあわせ、新サービスとして公衆無線LANサービス「au Wi-Fi SPOT」の提供を6月末より開始すると発表した。
■10万スポットを年度内に設置！国内最大級の公衆無線LANサービス提供へ
au Wi-Fi SPOTは、カフェやホテル、駅などの公共の施設において、Wi-Fiスポットに接続できるサービスで、利用料金は無料。対象者は、パケット定額サービス「ISフラット」もしくは「プランF（IS）シンプル/プランF（IS）」に契約しているユーザーとなる。
同サービスは2011年度末までには、Wi-Fiスポットを約10万スポットまで拡大する予定で、国内最大級の規模になるという。
■3GとWi-Fiの回線を自動切り替え
au Wi-Fi SPOT は、ワンタッチで接続できるWidgetを採用することで、面倒なIDやパスワード入力なしで、利用できる。また、3GとWi-Fiの回線の切り替えも速度をモニタし自動で切り替えるようになるという。
これまでWi-Fi接続は「スピードの速さ」が利点とされながらも、「設定が難しそう」という声も強く、遠ざかっていたユーザーが多かった。au Wi-Fi SPOTを利用すれば面倒な設定をなくすことで、敷居が下がり新たな顧客の獲得を見込めるとしている。
■Wi-MAXとの連携で急速拡大が可能に
田中社長は約10万スポットのうち、9割は自社のスポットでカバーできると語った。本年末までに膨大なスポット設置ができる根拠について質問された田中氏は、スポットのバックホーンにWi-MAXの回線を利用することで、短期的にスポットを拡充する予定だと語った。

田中社長はauが今後めざす方針として、マルチデバイス・マルチネットワーク・マルチユースの「3M」を明言しており、新機種に搭載された機能も、複数端末の連携、3GとWi-Fiの併用、多用化を反映したものとなった。また、au Wi-Fi SPOTについては、「一生無料」だと豪語しているが、今回の発表をきっかけに新たにWi-Fi接続を始めるユーザーを取り込めるかに注目が集まる。
docomoは5月16日に発表したスマートフォン9機種のうち、7機種にテザリング機能を搭載させたが、一方のauは、夏モデルでは、テザリング機能に対応した端末の発表はなく、先に発売したhtc Desire EVOのみとなっている。このことについて、田中社長は、テザリング対応機種には高速回線が必要なことから、WiMAX端末に集約していくことを名言し、秋以降のWiMAX端末投入にも言及した。
